As part of the implementation of the Resolution on Environment Matters adopted by the 38th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers held in Astana, Kazakhstan on 28-30 June 2011, as well as the implementation of the Resolutions of the 4th Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers held in Hammamet, Tunisia, on 5-6 October 2010, and seeking to review its efforts for environment protection and enhancing its contribution towards sustainable development in the Muslim World, the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), jointly with the Presidency of Metrology and Environment Protection (MEP) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the General Secretariat of the OIC, and in collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan, will organize the 5th Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers in Astana on 17-18 May 2012.The Conference will address a number of issues pertaining to environment and sustainable development in the OIC member countries, with reference to the upcoming UN Conference on sustainable development (Rio+20) and also based on the guidelines of the Tunis Declaration adopted by the 4th Islamic Conference of Environment Ministers.

The Islamic Conference of Ministers Responsible for Water was held in Istanbul, Republic of Turkey during the period 05-06 March, 2012 under the theme “Working Together for a Water Secure Future”. The Conference was hosted by the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs of the Republic of Turkey. Ministers, Deputy Ministers and high level officials from 28 Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), OIC Institutions, Observers and international organizations participated in the Conference. The aim of the Conference was to provide an opportunity for the Ministers and Representatives of the OIC Member States to review and adopt the OIC Water Vision Document which has been prepared by an Advisory Panel of Experts, composed of prominent experts from all the OIC regions, and discuss major issues and challenges related to the implementation of the OIC Water Vision. Mr. Nabil Dabour, Director of Economic and Social Research Department, and Mr. Mazhar Hussain, Researcher, represented the Centre thereat.

The Meeting of Senior Officials from Member States of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) took place in Istanbul, Republic of Turkey from 12 to 14 January 2012 to consider the OIC Water Vision document. The Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, Republic of Turkey in collaboration with the OIC General Secretariat hosted the Meeting. Fifty participants from thirty-two OIC Member States and OIC Institutions attended the Meeting during which Mr. Atilla Karaman, Researcher, represented the SESRIC.
